Prior to each daily auction, the chief auctioneer logs into the system to check the supply catalogue. The supply catalogue provides detailed information of all fish landed the previous day including the name of the boat, the species of fish, where they were caught, how many days the fishing vessel spent at sea, the weight, the method of catch and the quality grades. More on the quality grades and the method of catch can be found at https://brixhamfishmarket.co.uk/fish-quality/
This information is uploaded to the BTA back end systems by the night shift when they grade and group the catch. This provides the details buyers need to make their purchasing decisions and bids.
The auctioneer will only give the go-ahead to start the online auction when he is happy that everything on the system is correct and complete.
Each buyer has the ability to modify the “appearance” of the display that is shown on his/her screen by dragging and dropping a variety of widgets to show only the information they are interested in.
Once a bid has been accepted the buyers’ details are sent automatically to the BTA back office system for checking, preparation and printing. The printed tallies go into the boxes of fish purchased.
Every buyer can access the system to confirm this information by simply logging in and checking their reports.
On completion of the auction the sales are checked, invoices are raised, and costs are settled.
Although the market area is a little quieter than it was there is still plenty of activity in the market with agents, fish box tippers, market staff and some buyers and their staff all making sure the fish buying process every day of the week continues to operate efficiently.
Tick tock, tick tock, all going well with the Brixham clock!
