As part of the new website build, we needed some video footage and imagery that explained the journey of the fish you eat, taken from the time it’s caught at sea, landed on the harbour, sold at Brixham Fish Market and ending up on plates of some of the UK’s finest restaurants.

We met up with the team from The Really Good Media Company, based near Buckfastleigh who specialise in drone and video imaging to discuss the project. Jack and Jack (yes, two Jacks run the company) came up with some fabulous ideas of how we could capture the key elements of the story. There were two key issues:

  1. We needed a boat to take us out to film one of the beam trawlers at work and
  2. We had to find a way of getting up at stupid o’clock for a few mornings!

The first issue was resolved when BTA got Mike Sharp to agree to take the team out to film one of his returning trawlers, MFV Emily Rose.

The second issue was resolved because we had no other option but to set the alarm for an early rise. Once we arrived at Brixham Marina we headed out on a glorious but slightly dull morning to a spot quite a few miles off Berry Head and met Emily Rose on her way back to port. The team set up the drone and away it flew circling the Emily Rose and getting some great footage.

At this point I must apologise to the crew who must have been exhausted after 5 days at sea and could have done without all of this palaver. But hat’s off to them they were great, putting up with our requests to speed up, slow down, raise/lower the beams. Thank you to the crew of Emily Rose and especially skipper Neil Craggs.

We then headed inshore back to Brixham Breakwater where Mike managed to get the video crew onboard the trawler to shoot the final steam into Brixham and the fish being landed on the quayside.

Filming part two

The next morning we all met at 6am at Brixham Fish Market auction to see our Chief Auctioneer, John Rogers, ring the bell to start proceedings. With the fish laid out by species Jack, Jack and assistant Will were then able to film the catch of the Emily Rose being sold and all the other action taking place at the auction!

Some of that catch was bought by Robert Simonetti of Roberts Fisheries and Josh Perks of Brixham Seafish who both kindly allowed the crew access to their premises to film the fish being prepared for dispatch.

The final leg of the journey was delivery of part of the catch to Roberts Simply Fish Bar & Grill where Yaya cooked up a lovely meal that was captured (and eaten) by the video crew.

We’ve yet to see the full film of the journey but we should be getting that soon before the final cut is ready to be uploaded to the new website.

Website update (www.brixhamfishmarket.co.uk)

The design of the pages have been completed, most of the content has been written and we’re now in the process of working with the web designers to sort out the key images we need to add to match up to the content and context of the page.

When all of the above has been agreed we will probably need a week of “snagging” or going through each page to ensure everyone is happy and the brief is being met.

Finally, we will ensure that the page layout, content and some of the back end information is set out to ensure all pages are visible to the search engines and the website can be easily found online. Thanks to WhiteSpace Advertising and our Brixham based marketing consultant Andrew Leon Walker for all their help with the new web site.

Fingers crossed we’ll be on target or as near as we can be with a go-live date in a few weeks time.

We’ll keep you posted.
